Dear T
How to answer your letter which I received OK. Glad you are very well. Our weather is very changeable too, we’ve had a few fine days, but today is changed again getting very rough and cold. Poor old Mrs Cattran is dead and buried house and furniture up for sale. Wish I had plenty of money to buy Brook Villa, nice little house that is. Louis’ garage is nearly finished proper building it had made there. Live in hopes of having a ride in their swanky car when it comes. Some swish eh. Louis has gone to Padstow for the herring season. I expect they will make enough up there to buy a car. Well good luck to them.
Poor Willie Jeffery is dead at Mousehole too (Lamorna). Jeffery I mean married Polgrean girl typhoid fever bad job isn’t it?
Lionel is still anxious about the plumbing book you promised to look him up, every week he asks about it.
Last but not least is the important news George Simons is married enough to frighten one. You know that girl Ellen Richards that lived up Martin Kerris. That one. He is no more fit to be married than a cat. I heard he was making up to her but couldn’t believe it, so Sunday night he came in to see me and her with him married Saturday in Penzance.
Jessie’s sailor boy has been home on long leave thought that was coming off now but put off again I doubt if she will have him after all. She makes me mad she would rather have old Willie Drew up Sheffield it wouldn’t frighten me in time.
George and wife are living up with Jessie Maud in part house.
Lilian and Archie are living over by Lilian got a meadow or two for poultry finished with Wales for the time.
Willie is on Mousehole Cliff Road That is the bunch of them almost stranded.
Well now finally for the time excuse pencil
Yours lovingly Mother.
Notes
Lionel did go on to work for the Gas Board – so maybe the book was useful! Willie Jeffery was 34 when he died.
I think that Jessie, Lilian and Willie are the adult children of James and Jessie Wallis from Higher Sheffield
Jessie aged 29 didn’t marry her sailor boy or Willie Drew. He was a widower aged 49. In fact she never married and died in 1938 aged 42.
